Talk:gymnasium

I never edited Wikitionary; I won't start today. However, not only in Swedish but also in e.g. Danish and German, "gymnasium" is a secondary school (high school). And, even in English, isn't "gymnasium" frequently used about such institutions in continental Europe?--83.93.40.63 08:30, 5 March 2007 (UTC) (w:user:noe)

I, too, would like to know, whether "gymnasium" is in English a correct word for that school type or not. For example, in Estonia, many schools have this word in their official English names. May-be it is accepted as a loan in English, but just not used much by native speakers? Or is it just simply wrong? It is mentioned with this meaning in this online dictionary, but not in dictionary.cambridge.org, for example.ML-et 10:33, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

I would avoid saying "correct" or "incorrect." I've never heard that use before (and the link you provide does say it is restricted primarily to Germany and other European countries - notably excluding England.) If you used the word "gymnasium" to refer to a prep school, you'd likely be misunderstood (or at least cause significant confusion) if you were addressing an audience here. --Connel MacKenzie 18:17, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
