Could the term hoedown stem from the southern German "Hoagartn" (which in turn stems from the words Heim (home) + Garten (garden))? A "Hoagartn" is a regional term for an informal gathering with music and dancing, these used to take place in the courtyard of a farm rather than in the local tavern.
It doesn't seem a big jump to hoedown especially as the term changes a lot even within Bavaria. http://www.maibaum-verein.de/11%20%28Hoagartn%29.htm
