New Material for usage and citation[edit]
I seldom edit here or sister projects other than Wikipedia, but ran across a 1919 non-capitalized usage of the word; the specific mention seems both quite notable and reliably sourced. While not specifically used in The American Hebrew article where it was found, it provides the original image, [[File:Glynnartikel.png]] for verifiability. The word's usage is noted, commented upon and referenced, in its own specific section on the author's page. Being unfamiliar with handling the general subject in this venue, I will leave it to others more experienced for now, and see what happens. Transition from meaning of "burnt sacrifice" to "destruction of people"[edit]
This NY Times headline from 1895 describes the burning of five Armenian villages in Turkey by Turkish gendarmes as a "holocaust", prefiguring the mentioned reference to Melville Carter using that word thirty years later for the burning of Smyrna in Turkey. Not familiar with Wiktionary guidelines, so didn't want to try ramming this into the article amateurishly, but thought it may be interesting to note. 212.126.224.100 14:33, 28 January 2020 (UTC)
