There are two kinds of hyperalgesia: 1. Primary hyperalgesia, which occurs within the area of damaged tissue. 2. Secondary hyperlagesia, which occurs in the tissues surrounding a damaged area which may also become supersensitive.

There are several sensitizing chemicals responsible for hyperalgesia that include bradykinins, prostaglandins, and substance P. These chemicals are released by the damaged tissue which results in the excitability of nociceptors (pain receptors)in and nearby areas.
