Notes on Italiot-Greek[edit]

Most likely from Latin canistrum, from Greek kanastron ‘wicker basket’, from kanna ‘cane, reed’. (Cognates: English 'canister', Italian 'canestro', Spanish "canasta")

Possible Greek script: κανὶστρι, but check against Griko sources - some of the given Greek renderings are different enough from the expected ones that none of these can be considered reliable without outside support. Elliott Dunstan (talk) 17:53, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
