Etymology[edit]

Proto-Indo-European:

  • *dn̥ǵʰwéh₂s ("tongue")
    • (The change *dn̥- > l- occured in three branches: Lithuanian, Armenian, Latin. Latin dingua was poorly attested. More likely that the original form was *l- and cognate with *leig̑h-.)
  • *leig̑h- ("to lick")
