Talk:love apple

I'm not saying the given etymology is necessarily wrong, but a different path seems possible, if not more likely, to me. In several European languages the tomato has names that compare it to the forbidden fruit of paradise; compare German Paradiesapfel, Hungarian paradicsom (both literally “paradise apple”), Maltese tadama (literally “[apple] of Adam”). This may have been due to the beautiful red appearance and the disappointing, regrettable taste. (Remember that the tomato was considered unswallowable in northern Europe until ca. 1900!) At any rate, being the apple of paradise it was the apple of sin, and, as sin is always first and foremost sexual sin, the "love apple". 90.186.83.214 18:34, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
