I cannot really understand how anyone could think this is a satisfactory definition.
While it is clear that the basic two definitions are included, it is totally unexplained in the context necessary to achieve a definition.
Let us take a lorry or a car with 4 forward gears: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. A low gear in the sense of a roadside sign saying "Keep in Low Gear", means 1st or 2nd. Unfortunately this is a HIGH gear ratio, not a low gear ratio.
A high gear RATIO is one where the engine turns the prop shaft more slowly than a low one. Similarly, a low gear RATIO is one where the shaft turns more quickly.
This page says: 1. The lowest gearing available [...] 2. One of the lower gearings [...]
Unfortunately, the "gearings" are the ratios, so we have told the public that the definition of low gear is "the lowest [ratios] available [...]"
As you can see, this is blatantly incorrect.
