Extended senses[edit]

There are extended senses in modern business use that ought to be included here. I'm not sure if you'd add a separate adjective lemma or consider these attributive uses of the noun.

  • As of an unregulated, open market service or commodity that normally is, or used to be, highly regulated: merchant transmission, merchant generation (in the electric and telecommunications utilities industries)
  • As of a formerly vertically integrated manufacturing process that has been disaggregated: merchant silicon (in the electronics industry, referring both to the general outsourcing of integrated circuit manufacturing and the more specific replacement of proprietary devices with third-party commodity ICs)
