The etymology of miętus[edit]
The fish called miętus has nothing to do with mięta (contrary to miętus = a candy), the given etymology is taken from the moon. It is enough to notice that in Czech the fish is termed mník, in Old Czech měn (and in Hungarian menyhal = meny, borrowed from Slavic, + hal ‘fish’). The modern spelling is unetymological, historically mientus would have been correct. The suffix -tus may be due to adideation to mięta, but the stem is mien-. The reconstructed Proto-Slavic form is mьnь, cf. [1]. This word is said to have further IE connections.
