Part of speech?[edit]

I think both are both. Similarly, fewer and fewer.
I suppose that we can justify treating the determiner/adverb cases as special and entryworthy, but many adjectives and adverbs can be reduplicated yielding the notion of "increasingly":
Highway travel has gotten [safer and safer]/[less and less dangerous].
Paler and paler colors became fashionable.
They closed up shop earlier and earlier.
