Early uses[edit]

According to Google's ngram viewer, the phrase didn't exist before 1900 and became common only after 1920. One early use is in chapter 21 of Jack London: A daughter of the snows (1902). --LA2 14:00, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
