Hello, in french

beware, "pallier" is a "false friend", because

1/ it is a transitive verb , but in France, 90 % of the locutors use it as an indirect t.v. , and they'll correct you if you say, for ex.: "je pallie le manque de fraicheur de ce poisson en pissant dessus ("I palliate this fish freshlessness by peeing onto it" (which is a common fishermen & fishmongers practice around the Mediterranean sea...) , since they are sure one should say "je pallie à ..."("I palliate to...").

So it's better to avoid "pallier" , & use synonyms like "atténuer", "remédier à" - or periphrases , as "appliquer un cautère sur une jambe de bois" ("to apply a cautery on a wooden leg"), or "mettre les balayures sous le tapis" ("hide the sweepings under the carpet"), or even "cacher la merde du chat" ("hide away the cat's droppings").

2/ because of its french connotation of "trying to makedo with", or "hiding a poorly done work", "pallier" is often mixed up with "pailler" (to cover the soil with straw to protect a plant from heat or cold).

The Encyclopedia Britannica uses the phrase palliate opisthobranchs in its mollusc article, or at least it did back in 1878 .... the phrase might have been a one-off usage because I havent been able to turn up anything else yet. —Soap— 16:52, 3 May 2020 (UTC)
