Spanish pronunciation[edit]

A lot of Spanish speakers pronounce this word ['paf], at least in Spain. I think it's a hypercorrection of the well-known lack of a phonemic /b/–/v/ distinction in Spanish (Beati hispani, quibus vivere bibere est), as though approximating a hypothetical English word *puv. Needless to say, conscientious speakers aware of its etymology tend to find it frustrating, but a committed descriptivist should probably add this pronunciation to the Spanish section, if only to spite both us and the RAE.79.117.212.81 12:07, 15 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
