Although the single definition "An advocate of purism" is correct as far as it goes, it has some faults:
!. "Purism" (capitalized) is a school of art.
2. Purist is defined in other online dictionaries in several ways: "a person who adheres strictly and often excessively to a tradition" (Merriam-Webster.com); "a person who advocates the strictest application of the principles or standards in any field, or who insists on purity in language, style, etc." (Dictionary.com); "someone who believes in and follows very traditional rules or ideas about a subject" (dictionary.cambridge.org); etc.
3. The word may be used humorously or sarcastically, even in a technical field, to mean someone old-fashioned, or resistant to change. The quotation under the noun about the changing definition of "industrial music" may be an example of this.
4. The word may refer to someone with a rigid belief in anything -- such as a "Puritan" - IIRC, the "Puritans" got their name from their beliefs which were considered odd. Wastrel Way (talk) 00:41, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
