The previous etymology as loan from Latin arēna is outdated, because it would require additional assumptions: Lat. ar- normally yields Alb. rr , and e.g., Lat. frēnum yielded Geg frê(ni) ‘fence’; further, it is a semantically doubtful loan, for the secondary meaning ‘theatre’ would – as cultural loan – be more convincing. Therefore, better either directly from PIE er- (Pokorny p 332-4,5 ‘Erde, Sand, locker’, or as loan via cf. Lat. rārus, thus in Geg rânë the r-r dissimilated > r-n.
