Secondary meaning[edit]

I am from the American West. My understanding has always been that a ranch raises free-range cattle (or perhaps other animals). When a small farm or family home is called a ranch that is an informal use of the word. You could also call, for instance, a bookstore "The Book Ranch" and people would know what you were talking about; but that's not the main meaning. I'd like to see the first meaning and then a second one something like: "a home, farm, or establishment (informal)" Redddogg 17:00, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
