These are not just Japanese. There are equivalents in Korea and Taiwan that I've eaten and I've heard of them in Hong Kong too.

This is especially true of the triangular mass produced type sold in convenience stores, which are identical across the three cultures differing only by fillings. I'm sure some of the companies making them or making the equipment to make them market to two or three countries.
