Archaic slang sense?[edit]

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) defines ropes (seemingly too narrowly) as "the ways of London lower life. To know the ropes is to be conversant with the minutiae of metropolitan dodges, as regards both the streets and the sporting world." We have learn the ropes and (as a redirect) know the ropes, but Hotten seems to suggest that "the ropes" could be used alone. Equinox 11:23, 14 February 2022 (UTC)Reply
