Norse etymology of sól[edit]

The entry states that the Icelandic sól derives from Latin sol. In Gerhard Köbler's etymological dictionary of the Old Norse language (the ancestor of modern Icelandic), Köbler gives a Germanic stem *sôwila- as origin of the Norse / Icelandic word. As "sun" is such a basic word denoting a thing both ubiquitous and of mythological importance, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be native rather than borrowed from another language? -- 20:05, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
