Deleted definition[edit]

After due consideration, I deleted the definition "to commit simony." Although in this year of the plague I could not go to the library to check the OED, I did check my own classic Webster's (including the 3rd ed.), and I checked the usual suspects on the web. I even checked simonize in Google books. I found no support for the use of simonize in connection with simony. To me it doesn't even seem like a form that would be used in speech or writing (Dante put him in Hell because he simonized. ?) Anyway, if the definition is to be retained it doesn't belong in the same etymology as the usual definition. "Simony" goes back to the New Testament bad guy Simon Magus (who is also referred to by Josephus).
