The word "slush" in "slushbox" refers to the fluid-drive of the torque converter (think of slush turning in a slushy machine. There's a smoothing-out of the take-up of turning momentum). It has no direct reference to the "reduction of performance in comparison to a manual transmission", nor is it derogatory as such.
