I think the penny dropped is an alteration of the phrase "the nickel dropped" from Raymond Chandler's "The Long Goodbye" 71.253.203.204 00:58, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Probably not, The Long Goodbye was published in 1953, while the OED has a Daily Mirror quotation of the phrase from as early as 1939. --Droigheann (talk) 10:41, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
