English?[edit]

Webster 1913 suggests that this can also be an English word for a sheep's fleece. I can't seem to attest it. Equinox 00:19, 27 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

OED has it under the obsolete form toyson, used as short for toison d'or (the order of knighthood), and citations:
a1505 in C. L. Kingsford Chron. London (1905) 230 Other honourable personages in Ambassade, as his second Chamberlayn and Knyght of the Toyson.
1548 Hall's Vnion: Henry VIII f. xiijv, The lord Bresley knight of the Toyson.
1601 R. Johnson tr. G. Botero Travellers Breviat (1603) 244 There is also the order of the Toysone, of which his maiestie is chiefe.
