Note: the Funk and Wagnalls Standard Dictionary of the English Language, International Edition (1960) contains the following discussion under the heading for Asperse: "To asperse is to bespatter with injurious charges; to defame is to assail one's good name; to malign is to circulate studied and malicious attacks upon character; to traduce is to exhibit real or assumed traits in an odious light."
