Talk:wheretoward

I'm having trouble figuring out the grammar for this word. It seems adverbial, but grammatically it behaves differently than most adverbs. Most adverbs, if deleted, leave the sentence still grammaticalal, if less precise. Not so with wheretoward: compare

  • It was the house wheretoward I ran.
  • *It was the house I ran.

Similarly, a grammatical sentence with wheretoward used an adverb, becomes ungrammatical if a different abverb is replaced:

  • *It was the house quickly I ran.

Can someone help better classify this confusing word? :-)

I believe this is a conjunction, not an adverb. —Stephen 19:13, 20 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
