I recall significant, perhaps dated, UK use of beyond the pale in the sense of unruly behaviour associated with lawless areas outside the stockade. I wasn't previously aware that the paling fence might be round a whole town or in a foreign country, and I had never heard within the pale. I've heard this in everyday speech (US.) Formatted article, added definition and a quotation. Can't vouch for the etymology, though. I don't know how to change the capitalization problem (P for Pale.) Jeffqyzt 14:39, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
