Hello, the equivalent in french[edit]

(well known & used in french army, scouts, alpinists, trekkers & so on...) is "crapahuter". The "Petit Larousse 2008" (p.266) has it coming from "crapaud" (toad) & "chahut" (rumpus). In fact , I believe it to come from the expression "mettre le crabotage" ( to start the direct-gear drive on a Jeep) , with the alteration of "b" into "p" (are not toads believed to enjoy frolics in quagmire ?) and the clownic transformation (usually implying a joking & enjoying bout in the social groups before mentionned) of "au" (normally pronounced ô) into "ahu".

We also have "s'échiner" (to strain one's back-bone, panting under full-gear bags) ...

& PS : Thanks to Semper & Mglove for their kind advices. Must be annoying to see someone yomping across one's flower-beds... T.y. Arapaima 11:03, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

As I said, you just need to add the translations separately. I wasn't questioning their correctness. Mglovesfun (talk) 11:18, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
My good will has often been said to be too good, & my "bringing my stone" looks at times more like "the bear's cobblestone" (cf La Fontaine's fable). Thanks a lot, t.y.

"To yomp" : we also have : "avancer à marches forcées" (to progress by strenuous stages)

But why a red link for (deprecated template usage) crapahuter ? As I said, it exists in an everyday's dictionnary, the "Petit Larousse 2008" Arapaima 08:07, 3 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wow ! Only one word : "Semper, bravissimo !!". But I doubt "que je crapahutasse" has ever been used in french...Though, maybe in the evening, after some glasses, in some high-mountain refuges, or army messes... BTW , the only foreigner I ever met who was able to recite a full french conjugation was a young british (oxonian?) cleric, it was in Granada (Andalucia) some 20 years ago, at a paella restaurant in the old town, I was dubfounded, and his fiancée melted away while listening...Maybe he was you ?...
