Etymology[edit]

First attested as are in 1280-1287. Derived from an inflected form of te (at) and the hydronym Aar, which is derived from Proto-Indo-European *er (move, rouse). Cognates of the hydronym include German Aare, Ahr and Spanish Ara. Compare Ardorf.
