Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *Twajjô (the twofold one), originally weak form of lost adjective *twajjaz (twofold), from Proto-Indo-European *dwoyHós, whence also Lithuanian dvejì, Sanskrit द्वय (dvaya, double, twofold), Ancient Greek δοιός (doiós, double, twofold). Compare Proto-Germanic *Frōdô (the wise one, personal name) (whence Old Norse Fróði), from *frōdaz (wise) (whence Old Norse fróðr).
