Third Declension[edit]

I-Stems[edit]

The i-stem inflections are confusing because there were somewhat in flux. It may be easier to grasp the i-stem situation and the many exceptions if we first consider the original situation. Originally, i-stems were distinct in the following inflections:

Consonant Stem (Original) I-Stem
Singular Accusative m & f -em -im
Ablative -e
Plural Nominative m & f -ēs -īs
n -a -ia
Genitive -um -ium
Accusative m & f -ēs -īs
n -a -ia

These distinctions were maintained in the classical period in relatively few words, however. Some i-stem inflections fared worse than others.

Masculine & Feminine Parasyllaba[edit]

In masculine and feminines, the general trend was to lose i-stem inflections.

  • The nom. pl. -īs appeared very rarely, if at all.
  • The acc. sg. -im was kept in very few words, and alternated with -em in a few others.
  • The abl. sg. was kept in very few words, and alternated with -e in a few others.
  • The acc. pl. -īs alternated with -ēs
  • Only the gen. pl. -ium was kept in most words.
Neuter Parasyllaba[edit]

In neuter words:

  • The nom. & acc. pl. -ia, the abl. sg. , and the gen. pl. -ium were kept.
