Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wiktionary. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk (discussion) and vote pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~, which automatically produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the beer parlour or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome! I don't know if you're aware of this or not, but on Wiktionary, Greek is actually shorthand for modern Greek, whereas if you're referring to something from the Classical/Koine region, that's under Ancient Greek. We have a separate template for this for etymologies {AGr.} instead of {Gr.}. I see you have a talent for etymologies, which is excellent in that we are sorely lacking in them. If you like, you could also take a look at Category:Ancient Greek language or Index:Ancient Greek to see what we have thus far. Again, any questions or comments (or rants), feel free to drop a line on my talk page. Cerealkiller13 01:42, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Etymology format

[edit]

While the specifics vary from user to user, we prefer to have transcriptions of spelling insde parentheses and translations of meaning inside quotes. Thus:

Greek βακτήριον (bakterion), "small staff".

or

Greek βακτήριον (bakterion), "small staff".

instead of

Greek βακτήριον bakterion, "small staff".
