Categories

Mark4011, I see you are helping add categories to a bunch of my old entries. Thanks for the follow-up. I'll happily add categories to my own idioms-and-stuff if you'll point me toward the right format or help page. I come and go here depending on how busy I am in real life, so I miss some developing conventions. My priority is to provide accurate definitions, but I prefer not to create extra cleanup work for others.

A bad taste in my mouth

1. We don't start titles with a definite or indefinite article.
2. We don't use my but one's - because it could be yours or hers just as well, and we'd have lots of duplicate definitions.
3. Are you sure that it is an adjectival phrase? It looks like it stands for a noun to me. What thing did it leave? - a bad taste.

I was at Wiktionary:List_of_idioms_(alphabetic) and I jumped headfirst into adding entries to the articles listed there. Sorry about that, I'm still relatively new at this.

So, applying what you said above, I should have changed the link so it pointed to bad taste in one's mouth and added an entry to that? — Mark4011 23:07, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Welcome

It's sad to see that you should start your experience here by dealing with one of our more unsavoury hangers-on, but welcome anyway. We will all agree that anyone has the right to immediately revert obvious vandalism, though getting further help just depends on who happens to be available at the time. I can appreciate your disgust when some member of your family happens on one of these vandalized pages, and I hope that there is at least some consolation in the fact that vandals' damage is limited by the time available to them. They can only damage a finite number of articles, and there are more of us to revert on a round the clock basis. Fortunately, then, the likelihood that a non-wikimanic family member will encounter one of these pages is low.

Edit wars do happen, but we have not yet needed to develop a policy on that issue. The incidence remains fairly low. To a large extent the nature of the project may be responsible for this. The scope for mutually hostile interpretations of events is much lower here so that we have not reached the often poisoned atmosphere that you encounter on Wikipedia. Formatting suggestion

First, thanks for helping grow the list of idioms!

One suggestion when entering idioms: Consider using the template {{idiom}} at the beginning of the definition for an idiomatic sense of a term. It marks that particular sense as idiomatic, allowing you to include literal senses, and it automagically includes the category marker. Even if you don't put in any literal senses, someone else might later, and this makes the transition a bit easier. It's safe to use as many times as you like. Also, consider marking a phrase as "Noun phrase" (or "Verb phrase," or "Adjectival phrase" as the case may be) as opposed to just "Noun".

I've edited barrel of laughs as an example, since it has both idiomatic and non-idiomatic senses. I won't edit anything further (I think I've meddled with one or two other entries already) — I'm just illustrating the idea.
