Thanks for the work you're doing on pronunciations. I've reinstated and fixed the SAMPA at intermittent - where the pronunciation includes an = sign you need to prefix it with 1= (or 2= for a second pronunciation, etc), i.e. {{SAMPA|1=/%Int3:(r)"mItn=t/}}. This is because in template syntax everything between a | and = is treated as the name of a parameter. If there is no equals signs, it parses the parameters in the specified order, the 1= is therefore telling it to parse everything up to | or }} (whichever comes first) as the content of the first parameter, rather than treating t/ as the content of an undefined parameter named /%Int3:(r)"mItn. Well, I'm currently reading the recent vote on phonemic/phonetic transcription of [ɹ] for English words, and trying to decide how best to transcribe things like photo in light of that. Because you're right that [ˈfoʊɾoʊ] would be the correct phonetic transcription (you'd have to be real stodgy to say [ˈfoʊtoʊ]), I was shooting for a phonemic transcription. It's just questionable how far to take that, because to be purely phonemic, it would be unnecessary to distinguish between RP and US pronunciations in a lot of cases (including photo). I think the best rule of thumb for pronunciations is to do the most precise transcription which would apply to the majority of American speakers. If I'm not mistaken, using the flap instead of the full stop would apply to most American speakers (and I would assume the Brits as well), and should thus be used. -Atelaes λάλει ἐμοί 22:10, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

Probably not the Brits, in this case. While I like that idea, it still doesn't solve the phonemic/phonetic transcription problem. Currently, almost all the pronunciations I've run into are enclosed in slashes, implying a phonemic transcription. But I don't think we want a true phonemic transcription. At least, the Wiktionary:Pronunciation page isn't too clear on what should/shouldn't be used, and after reading that [ɹ] vs. [r] vote, doesn't seem like the community is either. I guess I'll change photo, but this needs to get cleared up a bit. Torgo 22:32, 17 March 2008 (UTC)
