From both Old Norse vǫllr (“field, flat ground, meadow”), from Proto-Germanic *walþuz (“forest”), from Proto-Indo-European *wolHt- or *wel- (“to see”) + and from Old Norse dres (“a cleaved road to be ridden on by a horse”).
