Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

  • (Doetinchem) First attested as winburg in 1185. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a compound formed from Old Dutch winna (pasture) and burg (reinforced settlement). A different etymology interprets the first component as Old Dutch wini (friend).
  • (Epe) First attested as op de Wijnberg in 1657. Derived from wijnberg (place where grapes grow). Named after a farm named in turn after a field.
