External links are links to other websites other than Wiktionary. According to Wiktionary:Votes/2011-07/External links, links to other Wikimedia projects are also external links.

Formatting

The usual formats for an external link are the following: [http://www.google.co.uk]

Which displays as: [1] (these are automatically numbered by the server; [1], [2], etc.)

[http://www.google.co.uk Google]

Which displays as: Google

Note the use of single square brackets, not double square brackets which are for internal links

http://www.google.co.uk (no square brackets)

Which displays as: http://www.google.co.uk (full URL is visible)

Content

  • External links must never be promotional material, this is true for any namespace.
  • External links can be used to link to uses of a term. When done so, these should be directly under the definition, prefixed with #* and not in the external link section. Putting these on the citation page or under the head Quotations is acceptable, but not recommended.
  • External links may be used to link to other online dictionaries, encyclopedias or glossaries
  • External links may link to other Wikimedia projects, such as Wikipedia, Wikispecies, Commons, etc.
  • External links are rarely used to link to further information on a given topic other than Wikimedia projects, dictionaries, encyclopedias or glossaries. While this is not banned, it is more common to link to Wikipedia and add the external links to Wikipedia instead of Wiktionary
  • Dead links should be removed immediately
  • Any external links should be to reliable information, not to blogs, social network pages, unsourced anonymous websites, etc.

Placement

According to the vote Wiktionary:Votes/2011-07/External links "In the 0th namespace, any line of text whose only purpose is linking to an external website (for example, a link to an encyclopedia, such as Wikipedia, or 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica), should be placed within an "External links" section, and never within a "See also" section."

This does not apply to external links in attestations, which are to be placed with the attestations themselves. The following is from croç as of 14:11, 16 January 2012:

==Old Occitan==

===Noun===
{{head|pro|noun|g=f|sort=croc}}

# [[cross]] {{gloss|X shape}}
#* ''La Nobla Leyçon'', [http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k5401134d/f67.image line 312]
#*: Lo cors remas aqui pendu sus en la '''croç'''
#*:: His body remained here, hanging on the cross
