OpenSubtitles may be a biased source - eg. overusage of swearings

thanks for creating this!; spreadsheet; what no of total words did you find in the subtitles you analysed?[edit]

Hiya,

Hope this is the best way of getting in touch of the author of this page @Hermitd??

Again thanks a lot for creating this list! I am creating an Anki deck based on this list as I am sure many have done before. :-) For anyone else who wants such a thing here is a Google sheets doc with the list on this page, the link gives commenting rights. I slightly adjusted the couple of notes on "sie" and "John" but other than that it is a straight copy of the data from this page.

I also added a column with a calculation for each word that calculates "% of total occurrences of most frequent 5,000" just summing the occurrences all the 5,000 words and then dividing the occurrences of each word by that total.

Feel free to clone this sheet for your own purposes if you want this data as a spreadsheet or download the csv from there.

I'll post a link here to the Anki deck I am working on when done. Here is what I have so far after a day of work and exploration.

Can I ask how many total words you found in the subs? I want to calculate for each word the percentage of occurrences that word had compared to all words rather than just the 5,000. Feel it will be motivating for learners (including me).

Jamie

One-letter words missing[edit]

Thank you for the list, it would be useful for me, but apparently one-letter words (i, a, o, u, w, z) are missing. (At least "i", "a", "w" and "z" should be near the top, I guess?) It would be great if that was corrected. Macjan (talk) 09:53, 10 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
