Thanks Polyglot for restarting the discussion. I think our chances are better if we keep the question simple. When this came up before many of the negative votes were not just on the basic question. We then got into such questions as: Can a vote on the English Wiktionary be binding on Wiktionaries in other languages? Is this policy being decided for all Wiktionaries? Do we approve the use of a bot? Should we adopt then specified search criteria as part of the package? The comments that accompanied the "no" votes tended to be based on one of these secondary issues even when the person would support the main issue. Eclecticology 01:44, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

  1. Akavel Actually, I'm not so sure about it; I think there should be much thinking done before decision, especially considering the ease of use. And first of all - are there any real problems with capitalization? Secondly - I'd vote for making a (rough at least) list of categories of words, which exist only in capitalized versions - so that the considerations would have some data to base on:
Always capitalized words' categories
  • English: 'I', day names of the week, months, proper nouns (e.g. San Diego),
  • German: nouns
  • Proper nouns in many (European, at least) languages
  • Book Titles (which generally are not allowed in Wiktionary)
  • Most acronyms and initialisms, and some abbreviations
  • Chemistry symbols (He, Ne, Ag)
  • Roman numerals (should be upper and lower case separate listings)
  • anything else?
