Vietnamese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Italian Sicilia. The Italian phoneme /tʃ/ is generally rendered as the Vietnamese letter x and phoneme /s/, as if the Italian letter c was supposed to be pronounced like a "soft c" in French. Compare Phi-bô-na-xi (Fibonacci). French also influences how German names are rendered in Vietnamese.
