Etymology[edit]

First attested as sydehem in the twelfth century. A compound of either Proto-Germanic *sîda (sloping) or Old Dutch Sîdo (a personal name) and heem (home, settlement). The second element was gradually reinterpreted to dam (dam). Compare Didam.
