First attested as sinuinum in 850. Compound of an unclear first element and Old Dutch wina (“meadow, pasture”). The first element might be a term related to Old Norse sina (“old winter grass”) or Gothic 𐍃𐌹𐌽𐌴𐌹𐌲𐍃 (sineigs, “old”).
