Etymology[edit]
First attested as De Schwarte Hinde in 1811. Derived from zwart (“black”) and either horn (“corner of a levee”) or haan (“rooster”). Depending on the interpretation of the second element, the element zwart may refer to the colour of the earth around the settlement or to a pub sign depicting a black rooster.
