Etymology[edit]

From a³¹- +‎ jaʔ³¹. The root -jaʔ³¹ is possibly related to Burmese ရက် (rak, day (24 hrs)), hence from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-r(j)ak (day, full day; overnight). Cognate with Tibetan ཞག (zhag, evening, one day (24 hrs)), Old Chinese (*ljaːɡ, evening, night), Nuosu (hxot, night). Compare with Lhao Vo ayo, and Zaiwa ayoq.
