Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish alcaicería, from Andalusian Arabic القَيْصَرِيَّة (alqayṣaríyya), from Arabic قَيْصَر (qayṣar, Caesar; emperor), in turn from Ancient Greek Καῖσᾰρ (Kaîsar), from Latin Caesar, after the fact that such marketplaces in Andalusia were built by imperial decree.
