From Latin antīcus, variant form of antīquus, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂éntih₃kʷós (“appearing before; having prior aspect”), derived from the roots *h₂énti (locative singular of *h₂ent- (“front, front side”)) + *h₃ekʷ- (“eye; to see”).
