Etymology[edit]

Somehow connected to Old Norse igða (small bird), either from Proto-Germanic *ewwadjǭ or from a common North Germanic/Scandinavian substrate. Compare Old Norse æðr (elderduck) and Proto-Samic *(h)āvtë.
