Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀩𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*beṭṭa, child) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-). Cognate with Urdu بیٹِی (beṭī, daughter, child).
