Ultimately from Austronesian; compare Malay bunga lawang and Balinese ᬩᬸᬯᬄᬮᬯᬂ (buwah lawang), both meaning cloves. Cognates include Gorontalo hungolawa, Asilulu pukalawane, Hitu pualawane.
