Etymology[edit]

From Byzantine Greek βούβαλος (boúvalos).[1]; compare also Latin būbalus, both from Ancient Greek βούβαλος (boúbalos, buffalo). Identical with Thracian βόλινθος id., which might suggest an autochthon origin, or a Balkan substratum word[2].
